POLLUTANTS

Metals

  • Semi-volatile metals
  • Low-volatilty metals
Heavy metals form as extremely fine particulate when a combustion gas is cooled. The key to effectively collecting them is to utilize a highly efficient wet electrostatic precipitator. The metals can be scrubbed similarly to the d/f described above. In addition, these metals tend to adhere to the surface of ash in the gas stream after gas cooling. Per unit of ash mass, significantly more metals are carried on the smaller particles than the larger particles since the smaller particles exhibit much higher specific surface area. A device, therefore, that has the ability to capture more of the smallest particulate will collect more of the heavy metals. For this reason wet electrostatic precipitators excel in this application.
