THERMOCOMPRESSORS Thermocompressor Introduction

Continuing increases in the cost of energy, and projected shortages of fuel oil feed stocks have re-emphasized the need for the development of alternate fuels and conservation of our present resources. Reclamation and reuse of valuable heat energy from processing operations represents one of the best opportunities for fuel conservation.

In theory, a Thermocompressor and an Ejector are identical. The difference is in the application. Ejectors are used to produce a vacuum. Thermocompressors are used to entrain and compress a low-pressure fluid to an intermediate reusable pressure/temperature.

Croll-Reynolds Thermocompressors are available in single-nozzle, multiple-nozzle, and spindle-operated configurations.

During operation, the mixture of motive steam and entrained fluid is recompressed through the diffuser, which converts velocity energy to pressure energy. The recompressed vapor can be reclaimed for return to the process. Thermocompressors are used throughout the process industries to reclaim waste steam and reduce steam/water consumption.

Industry Use:

  • Paper: Compensating for changes in temperature and discharge pressures of steam dryers while reclaiming waste stream
  • Pharmaceutical: Reclaiming the waste stream from vacuum drying heat-sensitive chemicals
  • Food: Recovering vapors removed from food during the concentration process
  • Chemical & Petrochemical: Reclaiming vapors from dryers, stills, strippers, and deodorizers.
Croll-Reynolds has been involved in heat recovery since the early 1940’s when thermocompressors were first used by the U.S. food and dairy industries to recapture and recompress spent steam from multi-effect evaporators. Since then, applications for Croll-Reynolds' Thermocompressors have increased as process engineers in the petrochemical, chemical, power, food and paper industries seek to recover and reuse steam.

Since thermocompressors operate with a wide variety of motive gases and pressures, they offer an unusual degree of flexibility to answer today’s varied process requirements.
